TWENTY SIX - The Panama Canal

Built to increase maritime trade and decrease time on the sea, The Panama Canal connects The Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. Total passage from either direction takes approximately 8 hours. To cross through the canal requires tolls be paid based on the size and weight of teh ship as well as type of cargo. Cruise ships have paid up to $250,000.00 USD to pass.

Failures at the initial attempts to build the canal by the French allowed The United States to build one of the largest and much difficult engineering marvels.

There are currently two sets of miter locks. A third set is currently being built to increase capacity as well as the size of the ships.
